Dr. Smirnoff’s interest in pursuing a career in the mental health field began with a psychology degree from Ohio University in 1996. She went on to complete a master’s degree in counseling from Eastern Michigan University, and was first licensed as a counselor in the State of Michigan in 1998. Dr. Smirnoff began her work experience as a counselor in the counseling center at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan. She became licensed as a counselor in the State of Ohio in 2004 after completing her PhD in counselor education and supervision at The University of Toledo. She has worked as a clinical therapist at the River Centre Clinic in Sylvania, Ohio; at Harbor Behavioral’s Children Safe Harbor location in Toledo, Ohio; and, in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Toledo. Dr. Smirnoff's expertise is in cognitive behavioral therapy.
Dr. Smirnoff also served as a visiting faculty member of counseling at Western Michigan University and The University of Toledo. She most recently served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry for 6.5 years where she provided psychotherapy supervision to psychiatry residents while maintaining a full caseload in the adult outpatient clinic. Dr. Smirnoff has participated in research throughout her career and has been published in peer reviewed journals. As a believer in lifelong learning, she completed an MBA degree from The University of Toledo in 2016. She has also been a National Board Certified Counselor since 1998.
